70 Years of Fire: Metallurg Hockey Club Uniform Design

Metallurg is synonymous with the Ural style of hockey and a legacy of sporting excellence. The Steelworkers were champions of Russia, and with the creation of the KHL they continued to forge victories—winning the Gagarin Cup three times and reaching the final on two more occasions. In its milestone 70th season, the team takes the ice in uniforms designed in a studio, crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a genuine love for the game.

The logo now features additional embroidery the emblem is stitched with flying sparks, echoing the process of molten metal casting. From a distance, this dimensional detail is subtle, but up close the varied stitch directions catch the light, creating a scatter of short, gleaming flashes.

The numbers use a clean, traditional hockey-style typeface. Its strict, minimalist character is softened by decorative accents. As with the logo, the shapes of the digits and captain’s letters echo the embroidered sparks.

Anniversary patch

The anniversary patches commemorate the milestone across all three teams in the system. The upper part of Metallurg’s patch references a retro logo adapted specially for the club’s 70th anniversary.

Mill scale pattern

One of the most recognizable visual effects in steelmaking is the formation of mill scale on heated metal. As the surface oxidizes, a dense oxide layer with a vivid texture appears. Thin glowing veins of exposed metal shine between its segments, creating a strong contrast and a sense of living radiance. This effect is incorporated into the club’s identity on the chest and sleeves of the sweater, as well as in the player numbers.
