FUTSAL BEYOND THE ARCTIC CIRCLE. FC Norilsk Identity
Russia is a country of sporting sports phenoma. One of them is a futsal club from Norilsk. In a land of polar nights and the Northern Lights, MFK Norilsk Nickel has built an impressive trophy record: since its foundation in 1993, the club has won the Russian championship, lifted the Russian Cup twice, and come close to claiming the Super League title. Quberten Studio has rebranded the club, introducing a new name — FC Norilsk — along with a complete visual identity system for the team.

The studio had previously created the identity for HC Norilsk, where the polar bear became the central a key mascot. For the futsal team, however, the focus shifted toward natural phenomena — the North Star and the Aurora Borealis.

While hockey and the polar bear evoke power and toughness, futsal is a mesmerizing sport — much like the Northern Lights — full of slick combinations, skill moves, and explosive moments. The region’s unique landscape is reflected in the logo: the ball is stylized as Planet Earth, with the North Star positioned above the North Pole.

This element reinforces the club’s connection to the region. Adapting heraldic symbolism into a sports aesthetic has become a hallmark of modern identity design. Each team within the Norilsk sports organization interprets this element differently: the hockey crest features a more aggressive style, while the futsal version stays closer to the city’s original coat of arms, enhanced with a more athletic bear silhouette and rendered in the club’s signature colors.
